The ceremony was in a haveli courtyard — stone floors, oil lamps, the sound of evening aarti rising from the ghats nearby. We used only cold sparkular. When the sparks fired at the varmala, they lit the stone walls orange, and the whole courtyard looked, for those thirty seconds, like the ghats themselves.
